4K Ultra High-Definition Media System for Aircraft demonstrated by RightHand Technologies
Chicago IL (October 14, 2014) RightHand Technologies, a leading electronics design and manufacturing company specializing in aerospace video applications, is demonstrating a 4K Ultra High-Definition Media System at 2014 National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) Booth 3690. The system integrates a powerful 4K server platform with innovative configurable high speed video processing firmware and an ultra-sharp high definition display to produce the ultimate entertainment experience for discerning air travelers. This system, developed by the RightHand Technologies engineers, shows true 3840 x 1920 resolution video delivered at stunning 60 frames per second to a 32 inch Ultra High Definition Display over two 6-G SDI cables, for an impressive crystal clear, jitter free Ultra-HD viewing experience. To further demonstrate the system throughput and flexibility, the same video stream is also delivered to a video wall of four 1080 HD displays.
In the 4K Ultra High-Def Media System demonstration, a beautiful 3840 x 1920 stored video is delivered as two separate streams. First, a pair of 6G-SDI cables carries the video to a single 32 inch panel. At the same time, the video is delivered over four 3G-SDI cables to four 24’ 1080 video displays. Both video paths are synchronized on the receiving displays to create one consistent 4K image. The video delivery over SDI instead of HDMI has several major advantages for aircraft installations. SDI cables can run a longer distance and are much lighter weight that an HDMI solution. HDMI-2 is a much bulkier medium and it is practically limited to 25 feet or less while 3G-SDI cable specifications can reach over 10 times that distance. The practical length for SDI is dependent upon the diameter of the cable, among other factors. Longer cable length removes constraints on the IFE installation by allowing significant distance between the media server and display without adding substantial weight. Another significant advantage of the RightHand Technologies Ultra-High Def Media System is the speed. The server streams data at full 60 frames per second (fps), twice the frame rate of most media delivery systems, which are limited to 24fps or 30fps. The 60fps delivered data stream will result in much higher picture quality as more raw data is being delivered to the screen.
The RightHand Technologies 4K Ultra High Definition Media Server solution is more than meets the eye. In addition to the high throughput video server, the platform is highly configurable using the flexible API to our innovative firmware infrastructure. For instance, besides the video configurations being demonstrated, The UHD Media Server can also support alternate data streams, such as multi-input support and output to six individual 1080p displays over 3G-SDI The API also allows for other complex video manipulation, including multi-source windowing to support multi-view picture-in-picture, window scaling, sizing, panning and alpha blending. The Media Server storage space is flexible, depending upon the specific applications for the media server device.
The 4K Ultra High Definition Media Server demonstration unit being shown at NBAA is a prototype. The final hardware will be released in 2015 with FAA DO-160 certification, and smaller in footprint. Future releases will have the option of a 12G SDI fiber connection as well.
The RightHand Technology NBAA demonstration shows the 4K Ultra High Definition Media Server paired with the RightHand Technologies 32 inch High Definition Display. The high-def panel has an impressive 176 degree viewing angle in widescreen format showing over one billion crystal clear colors under anti-glare glass. The display accepts two 6G-SDI inputs for the video signal and displays data at a full 60Hz. When released in 2015, the ruggedized aluminum enclosed panel will be certified to DO-160 standards.
